Since its founding, the building has been known by several names, as recalled by local residents and recorded in newspapers: Charles Sumner Post #25, Grand Army Hall, Sumner Post, Centennial Hall, The G.A.R. and G.A.R. Post #25, Inc. Today, our legal corporate name is G.A.R. Post 25, Inc. However, in the summer of 2015, the Board of Directors and stakeholders decided to call the building Sumner Hall – a name that both keeps alive the name of the historical figure, Massachusetts abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner, whom the founders wished to honor and most clearly describes its current use.
