Donations from individuals, companies and foundations to our first Capital Campaign transformed a dilapidated structure into the beautiful building now known as Sumner Hall. Later donations allowed us to furnish the building and offer a wide range of programs, exhibits and initiatives. Between 2015 and 2019, donations, memberships, ticket sales and rentals paid for the basic monthly operating costs (approximately $2,500) required to keep Sumner Hall open to the public.
When COVID-19 required us to close our venue to the public in mid-March 2020, Sumner Hall’s income stream slowed to a trickle. Thanks to Covid-19 Emergency Management Grants from Maryland Humanities and Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, Sumner Hall has been able to continue to operate during the pandemic.
