A Spotlight on Our Partner: Social Action Committee for Racial Justice (SACRJ)
COVID-19 hit our community hard in March 2020, as evidenced by the number of our citizens who immediately suffered from food insecurity since children could no longer eat at school and breadwinners lost their jobs. The Social Action Committee for Racial Justice (SACR) sprang into action in mid-March. Powered by 150+ volunteers, SACRJ set up a system to purchase, package and distribute food to more than 200 families each week. Partnering with SACRJ, Sumner Hall volunteers coordinated fundraising efforts and provided financial management support to the initiative. Within six weeks we had raised $42,000 from local individuals and organizations; by December 2020 that total reached nearly $100,000. Additional matching funds obtained by the Kent County Government means that we have sufficient funds to continue this work through the summer of 2021. Learn more about this program here.
