Legacy Day 2023

Legacy Day – a festival that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of African Americans in Kent County – is held each August in Chestertown. It is offered free of charge to the public, thanks to the sponsorships of individuals and organizations.

The 10th anniversary celebration of Legacy Day will take place on August 18 and 19, 2023. We will honor African American contributions to our community as we return downtown with an exhibit and commemorative booklet, a genealogy workshop, a parade, receptions, food and craft vendors, Gospel concert, and dancing in the street.

In recognition of this milestone, Legacy Day 2023 will take a retrospective look at the themes of the past decade. We will recall the historic contributions of the African American community in the fields of work, education, religion, sports, military service, and music. We will honor those organizations and individuals who have enriched the culture and economy of Kent County over the years. We will also pay tribute to Ms. Airlee Ringgold Johnson and the other founders of Legacy Day.

Sponsorships allow us to offer Legacy Day free of charge to the community. As in previous years, we will recognize our sponsors on our printed materials, on Sumner Hall’s website, and on three large hanging banners at Sumner Hall, the Historical Society and on the bandstand. Sponsors will also be noted in our special tenth anniversary commemorative booklet.
