Legacy Day – a festival that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of African Americans in Kent County – has occurred each August for the past several years. It is offered free of charge to the public, thanks to the sponsorships of individuals and organizations.
Each year, the Legacy Day Committee selects a theme and builds a full day of experiences around it. In addition to an exhibit at the Bordley Building, everyone enjoys the parade; special art exhibits; an outdoor dance party along with vendors offering food, drinks and crafts. Many participants also attend the Genealogy Workshop and Gospel Concert that are offered each year.
In 2020, Legacy Day was a virtual event, due to the national health emergency caused by COVID-19. The 2021 event was a combination of live and virtual events. In 2022, we plan to have a mostly live event that honors African American veterans who served as members of the uniformed services from Revolutionary Days to the present time.
Legacy Day is produced by Sumner Hall with the Historical Society of Kent County
